Italian -ere verbs

  • 330 verbs in this group

The second conjugation is the smallest of the three and the most irregular. Where an -are verb usually behaves, an -ere verb usually has something to memorise, most often its past participle.

The irregularity is concentrated in two places. Past participles rarely follow the -uto rule (prendere gives preso, vedere gives visto, mettere gives messo), and the passato remoto follows the 1-3-3 pattern, where the io, lui/lei and loro forms take an irregular stem while tu, noi and voi stay regular.

The good news is that an irregular participle is a single fact that unlocks all seven compound tenses for that verb. It is the highest-leverage thing to memorise in Italian.
