Italian -ire verbs

  • 210 verbs in this group

The third conjugation splits in two, and nothing in the infinitive tells you which half a verb belongs to. Dormire conjugates as dormo, dormi, dorme. Finire inserts -isc- and gives finisco, finisci, finisce.

The insert appears in exactly four forms (the three singular persons and the third-person plural) and only in the presente, the congiuntivo presente and the imperativo. In every other tense the two patterns are identical.

Roughly two thirds of -ire verbs take -isc-, which makes it the majority pattern rather than the exception. Every -ire verb page on this site flags which one it follows.
