Italian verbs that take essere

  • 128 verbs in this group

In compound tenses most Italian verbs use avere, and the past participle never changes. A minority use essere, and with essere the participle agrees with the subject in gender and number, exactly like an adjective.

The group is coherent once you see it: verbs of motion and change of state (andare, venire, arrivare, partire, uscire, entrare, nascere, morire, diventare), essere and stare themselves, and every reflexive verb.

Getting the auxiliary wrong is the most audible error an intermediate learner makes, because it forces a second error (the agreement) right after it.
